Sun and Open Cloud announce the final release of JSR 22, The JAIN(™) Service Logic Execution Environment

22nd Feb 2004

The JAIN(™) SLEE Specification Leads and the Expert Group release the highly anticipated JAIN SLEE Specification into a welcoming telecommunications industry.

CANNES, FRANCE, - 3GSM WORLD CONGRESS FEBRUARY 23, 2004 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) and Open Cloud today announced the Final Release of the JAIN SLEE specification (JSR 22).

The JAIN SLEE platform is being adopted internationally by wireless & wireline network operators to provide new services and to enhance existing service offerings. JAIN SLEE platforms enable network operators to integrate these services with existing network infrastructure, thereby protecting existing investments while rapidly developing future applications using standard off-the-shelf Java tools. The JAIN SLEE specification provides a standard allowing Java(™) developers to build and deploy services into new real-time systems such as voice/data networks or industrial automation.

JAIN SLEE focuses on delivering available, reliable and scalable services that are portable between JAIN SLEE vendors. JAIN SLEE integrates an event model with a component programming model while incorporating standard management interfaces through JMX(™), resource adapter infrastructure for network adaptation, generic profile interfaces, persistence management for state redundancy, concurrency control and service facilities such as timers, alarm features, usage tracking and traces.

“JAIN SLEE technology drives Java into real-time communication network services,” said Alan Brenner, Vice President of Sun's Consumer & Mobile Systems Group. “Java and JAIN SLEE creates a new industry of next generation communication servers that will reduce network operation costs for network operators, presenting an environment that will stimulate new revenue generating services.”

Service portability, reduced time to market, and reduced costs combined with carrier grade capabilities enable carriers to deploy JAIN SLEE for messaging, IN and SIP based communications in their core network infrastructure. “JAIN SLEE plays a significant role in maximizing existing network assets and in Next Generation Network Infrastructure,” said Peter Barralet, CEO of Open Cloud. “JAIN SLEE is the catalyst for a change in the telecommunications industry that is unlocking value similar to the effect triggered by J2EE(™) in the Information Systems industry.”

The specification can be downloaded from http://jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=22. Further information on the JAIN Initiative can be found at http://java.sun.com/products/jain.
